Tips To Store Fruits For Months: This traditional desi method of keeping fruits fresh for months is going viral again on Instagram these days, because with this seasonal fruits can remain fresh for 4-5 months. That too without refrigerator and without any chemical. A video on Instagram has brought this old remedy back into limelight, where a woman is showing how to keep fruits like lemons, oranges and apples fresh for months by using ash and soil. This trick was used a lot in the mountains during the time of grandparents, because the specialty of ash is that it absorbs moisture, reduces bacteria and protects the fruits from spoiling.
Traditional way to keep seasonal fruits fresh for months
First of all, prepare a deep pit in the courtyard of your house, field, empty space or a big pot. It should be large enough to easily accommodate the number of fruits you want to store. First spread dry wood ash inside the pit. Keep in mind that the ash should be absolutely dry, because moist ash can spoil the fruits.

Now take the fruits which you want to store for a long time, like lemon, orange, apple, guava or papaya. The fruits should be absolutely dry. Adding wet fruits after washing can cause them to rot, so wipe them thoroughly with a cloth.
Now apply a layer of ash and place fruits one by one on it. After this again pour ash over the fruits and cover them completely. Ash protects the fruits from wind, moisture and changing temperatures. When all the fruits are buried in ashes, cover the pit back with ashes and on top of that with soil.
In this way, the natural seal of soil and ash keeps the fruits away from spoilage elements. Due to the ash, the fruits neither dry out quickly nor get moldy, and they look fresh even after 4-5 months. This technique has been used for centuries, especially in villages, where refrigerators were not available but fruits had to be preserved for a long time.
If you do not have land, you can adopt the same method in a big earthen pitcher or drum, put ash at the bottom, fruits in the middle, ash on top and then close the lid. This method can be easy for those living in the city.
