Auspicious timings for Purnima: Purnima Tithi has special significance in Hinduism, and when this Purnima falls in the month of Margashirsha (Agahan), its importance increases manifold. Religious importance of Margashirsha Purnima
Relation to Shri Krishna: In Shrimad Bhagwat Geeta, Lord Shri Krishna himself has said that “Maasanam Margashirshoham” means I am Margashirsha in all the months. Therefore, worshiping on the full moon day of this month directly brings blessings of Lord Krishna.
Pilgrimage bath and charity: According to the scriptures, taking bath in a holy river, lake or pond on this day is considered very auspicious. After bathing, donating things like food, clothes, blankets, sesame seeds and jaggery as per one’s capacity, one gets virtuous results.
Attainment of salvation: It is believed that the devotee who worships and donates as per rituals on the day of Margashirsha Purnima, his sins of his previous birth are also destroyed and he finds the path to salvation.
Method of worship of Margashirsha Purnima
On this day, in an auspicious time, take a bath by mixing Ganga water in some holy river or at home. After bathing, wear clean clothes and offer water to the rising sun. Then worship Lord Satyanarayan with proper rituals and recite the story. Offer them food after the story. Donate grains, clothes, fruits or sesame seeds to the poor or needy as per your capacity. After moonrise in the evening, offer Arghya mixed with milk and water to the Moon God. Chanting the mantra ‘Om Namo Bhagwate Vasudevay’ on this day is considered very fruitful.
