On this basis, the festival of Makar Sankranti will be celebrated on Wednesday, January 14 in the new year 2026. Bathing and donation of Makar Sankranti will also be done on 14th January only.

This is the mythological story

The war of Mahabharata lasted for a total of 18 days. Pandavas were victorious in this religious war. Bhishma Pitamah had led the Kaurava army as the chief commander for 10 days in this war. The Pandavas were troubled by their grandfather’s fighting skills in the battlefield. Later Pandavas took the help of Shikhandi to defeat Pitamah. Then Arjun showered arrows and made Bhishma Pitamah fall to the ground.

However, Bhishma Pitamah was blessed with the boon of voluntary death, hence he remained alive even after being injured by Arjun’s arrows. The grandfather waited for Sun God’s Uttarayan to sacrifice his life. Lord Surya becomes Uttarayan on the day of Makar Sankranti and those who sacrifice their lives on this day get salvation. Grandfather Bhishma wanted to see Hastinapur safe, that is why he remained alive for 58 days on a bed of arrows.
