Pineapple plant Home gardening: A new plant can be grown from the crown of pineapple. A new pineapple is ready at home in just 14-18 months.
Did you know that the head part of a pineapple, i.e. the crown, can become a whole new fruit plant and not kitchen waste? Yes, if planted properly, this plant can grow pineapple again at home in about 14–18 months. Without seeds, without expensive nurseries, just the stalk left at home is enough. Know how to plant pineapple plant at home this winter.
Prepare stalk for pineapple plant like this
While buying pineapple, keep in mind that the leaves should be green and hard. New leaves should be visible in the centre. Also, the crown should be tight, should not become loose when pulled, should not be cracked or rotten. Now hold the leafy part of the fruit with your hand and bend it slightly. The crown will come apart easily. With this, roots are formed faster.

dry for 24 hours
Clean the bottom and remove the bottom 1–2 inches of leaves. A white ‘heart’ part will be visible in the middle, it is from here that new roots emerge. Now dry it for 24 hours, this prevents fungal infection. Only the dry base takes root in soil or water.
Making Pineapple Root in Water
Pour only 1 inch of water into the glass and place the crown so that only the bottom touches the water. Change the water every 2 days and white roots will start appearing in 10–15 days. Now prepare the perfect mix to apply in the soil. Pineapples require very light, draining soil. In such a situation, choose soil mixture of 40% Garden soil, 40% Cocopeat and 20% Sand/Perlite.

8–10 inch pot
Fill the bottom with large drainage holes and pebbles. Press the root part 2 inches into the soil and water lightly from above. Keep the pot in a sunny place for 5–6 hours. Keep in mind that pineapple is drought-tolerant, too much water causes it to rot. Water lightly every 4–5 days and in winter, water only when the soil is dry.
Tips to accelerate growth
Mix vermiwash or cow urine in 10ml and 1L water 2 times a month. You can use banana peel. It contains potassium, hence use it once a month. When the plant is 10–12 months old, keep a cut apple near the pot for 2–3 days. Ethylene gas from apple excites pineapple for flowering. Farmers also use this method.
When will the pineapples arrive?
In 8–10 months the plant will grow to 2–3 feet high. Flowers form in the middle of the plant from the 12th–14th month. A single large pineapple is produced from the flower. It takes another 4–5 months for the fruits to ripen. That means in total 14–18 months your self grown pineapple is ready.
