Father and brothers murder 18-year-old girl in ‘honor killing’ in Netherlands. The reason for the murder was adopting western lifestyle and giving up hijab. The father has confessed to the crime and the culprits can face jail up to 20-25 years.
Amsterdam: An 18-year-old girl was murdered by her father and brothers in the Netherlands for living a Western way of life. Dutch prosecutors said the girl’s father and two brothers killed her. The name of the killed girl was Rayan Al Najjar. His body was found in a swamp in the northern Netherlands on May 28, 2024. His body was found six days after he went missing from home. The body was submerged in water, the mouth was gagged and tied with tape. Prosecutors say Ryan stopped wearing the hijab, started hanging out with boys and became active on social media, which the family didn’t approve of.
The immediate reason for the murder was appearing in a live video on TikTok without hijab. The night before the murder, his brothers took him to a secluded area away from a house in Rotterdam. The father joined them there, prosecutors said. Father Khalid’s DNA was found under his nails. Later he confessed to killing his daughter. But he sent an email to the Dutch media claiming that his sons had no involvement in it. However, the role of the brothers also came to light in the investigation. The brothers could face up to 20 years in prison and Khalid could face up to 25 years in prison. Defense lawyers will present their arguments on Monday. The court will pronounce its verdict on January 5, 2026.
