Story of Mokshada Ekadashi
Once upon a time there was a king named Vaikhanas. He loved his subjects like his children. One day the king saw his father suffering torture in hell in his dream. The next day the king called the Brahmins and asked the meaning of this dream. Then the Brahmins said that ‘There is a great ascetic sage named Parvata. He is the knower of past, present and future. They can tell you the meaning of this dream.

King Vaikhanas immediately went to the mountain sage and asked him the meaning of this dream ‘Your father had discriminated against his wives in his previous life due to which he has to suffer tortures in hell.’
Hearing the words of the mountain sage, King Vaikhanas asked for a way to liberate his father from hell. Parvat said, ‘The Ekadashi which falls in the Shukla Paksha of Margashirsha month is called Mokshada Ekadashi. It is going to provide salvation. You should fast on this Ekadashi along with your family and offer its fruits to your father. This can liberate your father from hell.
On the arrival of Mokshada Ekadashi, King Vaikhanas along with his family observed the fast of Mokshada Ekadashi as per the rituals, due to which his father got freedom from hell and went to heaven. In this way, whoever observes the fast of Mokshada Ekadashi, gets the salvation of his ancestors and after death he himself goes to heaven.
