importance of muharram
Muharram is the first month of the Islamic calendar and is based on the lunar cycle, so dates may vary from country to country depending on when the new moon appears. In India, the date of Muharram 2026 is Friday, June 26, 2026. This will give many people a three-day weekend. As the first month of the Islamic Hijri calendar, Muharram marks the beginning of the Islamic new year. Derived from the Arabic word meaning “taboo” or “forbidden”, Muharram is one of the four holy months of Islam, during which fighting is traditionally forbidden. It has deep religious and historical significance for Muslim communities around the world. For Shia Muslims, Muharram is a time of mourning and remembrance, especially on the day of Ashura, the tenth day of Muharram.
