Delhi government made a record of earning from liquor, collected Rs 1038 crore from tax in three months

Delhi government has earned a huge amount from tax on liquor in the first quarter of the current financial year.

Liquor has been a major source of income for all the states of the country. If we talk about Delhi, the government has earned huge money from tax on liquor in the first quarter of the financial year. According to officials, the Excise Department has recorded a revenue of about Rs 1,038 crore in the current June quarter, which is 17 percent more than the same period last year. According to officials, the main reason for this is the greater availability of different brands of liquor in shops this year. An official said that in the ongoing quarter this year, excise revenue has increased by about 17 per cent to about Rs 1,038 crore, compared to Rs 885 crore in the same period last year.

Why did revenue increase?

According to officials, the target of total excise revenue for 2026-27 has been fixed at Rs 7,200 crore as against the total revenue collection of about Rs 7,148 crore in 2025-26. Officials hope the increase in registered brands will provide more choice to consumers and help the capital regain market share lost in recent years. This huge growth is due to a decline in consumer movement to neighboring cities like Noida and Gurugram, where greater liquor choices and competitive prices had attracted buyers away from the national capital.

There was a decrease in registration last year

Officials indicated that the pace of registrations had slowed down last year due to uncertainty over the implementation of the policy, but the situation has since stabilised, reinvigorating efforts to expand the variety available in Delhi’s retail market. The current excise regime is an extension of the pre-2021 framework, which came into effect in September 2022 after the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government withdrew its reform-oriented 2021-22 policy amid allegations of irregularities. Since then, the old policy has been extended from time to time.

How many liquor shops in Delhi

Under this system, retail sales of liquor are managed by government corporations, including Delhi Tourism and Transport Development Corporation (DTTDC), Delhi State Civil Supplies Corporation (DSCSC) and Delhi State Industrial and Infrastructure Development Corporation (DSIIDC). Delhi currently has a network of over 700 liquor shops, as well as over 900 hotels, clubs and restaurants licensed to serve liquor.
