Adhik Maas 2026: There is not much time left for the year 2026 to begin. Next year is going to be very special, because the year 2026 will not be of 12 but of 13 months. The year 2026 will have more months. In the English calendar it is called leap year and in the Hindi calendar it is considered as Adhik Maas. The year 2026 will be Vikram Samvat 2083. According to the Hindi calendar, the new year starts from Chaitra month.
According to the English calendar, Adhik Maas will start from May 17 in the year 2026. This Adhik Maas will last till June 15, 2026. In the Hindi calendar, next year Jyeshtha month will come in Adhik month. Adhik Maas is considered to have special significance for chanting, penance, worship of Lord Vishnu and pilgrimage.
Why are these works not done in more months?
However, more month is not considered auspicious. Due to being dirty it is also called Malmas. In Adhik Maas, auspicious works like marriage, mundan, housewarming, yajnopavit, naming are not started. Purchase of land, house and new works are also not started in this Adhik month.

According to Hindi calendar, Sun and Moon form the basis of calculation of time. That is, the time is calculated on the basis of these. When the 32 months of the solar month are completed, there are 33 months of the lunar month. There is a difference of one month every third year between the solar year and the lunar year. To eliminate this difference, the sages had started the system of Adhik Maas.
Adhik Maas does not happen every year but once in the third year. The year in which there are more months is of 13 months. Adhik Maas is necessary to maintain the coordination between Hindi Panchang and seasons.
