Nature’s havoc in Indonesia: Two major earthquakes after landslides, havoc in Sumatra

Two earthquakes of magnitude 6.6 and 4.4 struck Simulue island in Sumatra in Indonesia. There is a possibility of damage in many areas. 17 people have died and thousands of houses have been destroyed in landslides due to continuous rains, hundreds of people are missing.

The first tremor was felt around 10 am and its intensity was measured at 6.6 on the Richter scale. The second tremor was felt around 12 noon and its intensity was measured at 4.4. No official report has been released yet regarding the extent of damage caused by the earthquake. This is the largest earthquake felt in Indonesia this year. Indonesia is inside the Ring of Fire. According to the US Geological Survey, the depth of the earthquake was measured at 16 miles. The earthquake lasted for about 7 seconds.

Indonesia is already struggling with landslides. As of Wednesday, 17 people have died due to landslides in Sumatra. According to the Meteorological Department of Indonesia, the landslide occurred due to continuous rain in Sumatra area.

Dozens of people are reported missing in the landslide

Indonesia’s police department says at least 4,000 houses have been destroyed due to the landslide. People are stranded on the roads and have currently been sent to relief camps.
