New Delhi: Kylian Mbappe lit up Athens with a breathtaking four-goal performance as Real Madrid battled their way to a tense 4-3 win over Olympiacos in the Champions League. The French superstar was the difference on a night where Madrid’s quality in attack had to bail out a patched-up defence missing several key players.
Olympiacos stunned the Spanish giants early when Francisco Chiquinho drove a brilliant strike from outside the box past stand-in keeper Andriy Lunin. For a brief moment, the hosts believed a famous upset could be on the cards but then Mbappe took charge.
He latched onto a superb pass from Vinicius Junior to level with a confident finish. He timed his leap perfectly moments later to guide Arda Guler’s cross into the bottom corner, leaving Olympiacos rattled and Madrid No. 7 smelled blood.

He even looked set to turn provider for Vinicus, who did find the net but the goal was chalked off due to Mbappe straying offside in the build-up. Madrid still pushed for more with Aurelien Tchouameni hitting the bar as the visitors threatened to run away with the game. But Olympiacos refused to fold, Mehdi Taremi powered in a header to make it 3-2 and breathe life back into the stadium.
Any nerves Madrid felt eased when Mbappe struck again, this time poking home from close range after clever play by Vinicius non the left. Four goals from six attempts summed up a display of ruthless efficiency.
Yet Olympiacos weren’t done as Ayoub El Kaabi rose highest to score and drag the game back into dangerous territory. Madrid held on in the final minutes as the home crowd roared for one last twist.
Record night for Mbappe
Mbappe now leads the Champions League scoring charts with nine goals in five matches. This is already his best goals return in a single European campaign and he has 22 goals in just 18 appearances for his new club across competitions. Real’s win ended a three-game slump and finally gave them a competitive victory in Athens after nine previous failed attempts.
