The whole world will be watching the meeting of US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska. Even though this top level meeting is being held on the peace agreement in the Rousakraine War, but it will also affect India. The reason is that the result of this important meeting of these two powerful leaders can decide whether India will continue to buy Russian oil as before? Or will the US huge tariffs imposed on India be reduced?
Earlier this month, Trump increased the tariff on India for buying Russian oil. On many products, this tariff was reduced to 50%, which is one of the highest tax imposed on any US business partner. Trump had threatened that if India continues to buy oil from Russia, it can be increased further.
The result of the meeting will decide further attitude
India is keeping a close watch on the conversation happening in Alaska. If the conversation between Trump and Putin is successful, then America’s attitude towards India may be soft, but if the conversation fails, America’s business attitude may be more strict. Before the meeting, Trump also indicated that perhaps Tariff on India has played a role in getting ready for Putin’s meeting. He said, when you lose your second largest customer and the first biggest customer is also going to lose, then it is sure to have an impact.
25% penalty to buy oil
On August 6, US President Donald Trump announced an additional 25% tariff (fee) on imports from India. This new 25% tariff has been imposed on the first 25% tariff approved by Trump on 31 July. The first 25% tariff has come into force from 7 August 2025, while the additional 25% tariff will be applicable from August 27. Such Trump had said that if Russia is not ready for the ceasefire and India continues to buy, then this tariff can be increased.
What will happen if it is not made?
The cheap crude oil being purchased from Russia is a big relief for India. In the last two years, this purchase has given a big relief to India. Due to buying oil from Russia, petrol and diesel prices in the domestic market were under control and the pressure on foreign exchange reserves was also less. In January 2022, India’s oil purchases from Russia were negligible. By June 2025, it increased a huge jump and increased by 3540%. Now India is importing 2022 lakh barrels of oil from Russia daily on an average of June. If Trump-Putin talks are inconclusive, India will have to reduce the purchase of oil from Russia to avoid high tariffs. India will once again have to turn to other oil vendors, which will be a costly deal.
Trump’s warning before the conversation
Before the meeting in Alaska, Donald Trump has clearly warned that if the conversation with Russia failed or Putin tried to obstruct peace talks, its consequences would be serious. If there is no concrete result in the meeting, strict steps will be taken against Russia. Let us know that Ukraine and Russia Jung, which started in 2022, is still going on. America and many European countries are trying to stop this war. After failing in many attempts, Trump has prepared Russia for talks by putting pressure on India. Now only after the conversation of both the leaders, it will be clear what will happen next?
