Tamil Nadu weather today: Heavy rain targets five districts

The IMD has predicted heavy rainfall for Thursday, November 27, specifically targeting five districts: Ramanathapuram, Pudukkottai, Thanjavur, Thiruvarur, and Nagapattinam. Additionally, strong land winds with speeds of 30-40 kmph are likely at one or two places in coastal Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal. The overall weather pattern for the state today indicates light to moderate rain with thunder and lightning at one or two places.

Escalation warning: Very heavy rain alert for November 28 & 29

The intensity of the rainfall is expected to increase significantly starting Friday, November 28.

  • On November 28: A heavy to very heavy rain alert has been issued for Thanjavur, Thiruvarur, and Nagapattinam districts. A heavy rain alert is also in place for Ramanathapuram, Sivaganga, Pudukkottai, Mayiladuthurai, Cuddalore, and Ariyalur.

  • On November 29 (Saturday): The focus of the most intense rainfall shifts to northern Tamil Nadu. A very heavy rain alert is in effect for Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Mayiladuthurai, Cuddalore, Villupuram, and Chengalpattu. Furthermore, heavy to very heavy rain is likely in Tiruvallur, Chennai, Kanchipuram, Ranipet, Tiruvannamalai, Kallakurichi, Ariyalur, Perambalur, and Thanjavur.

Chennai weather Forecast: Weekend of intense rainfall

Residents of the capital region are advised to brace for a wet weekend. For Saturday, November 29, the IMD has forecast heavy to very heavy rain at a few places in Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kanchipuram, and Ranipet districts. The alert continues into Sunday, November 30, with a prediction of heavy to very heavy rain in Tiruvallur, Chennai, Chengalpattu, and Kanchipuram.

Cyclone warning leads to alerts in seven ports

A low-pressure area over the southwest Bay of Bengal has prompted the India Meteorological Department to advise hoisting Cyclone Warning Signal No. 1 at seven ports — Chennai, Cuddalore, Nagapattinam, Ennore, Kattupalli, Puducherry and Karaikal. The signal indicates a distant weather disturbance with winds over the sea possibly touching 60 km/h. Fishermen have been warned not to venture into the sea, while coastal residents are urged to stay alert as conditions may turn squally.
