Two National Guard soldiers shot near White House, suspect in custody

Two National Guard soldiers were critically injured after being shot in what officials are calling a targeted ambush just a few blocks from the White House on Wednesday afternoon. The attack unfolded shortly after 2:15 pm near the busy junction of 17th and I Streets NW in Washington, DC — an area heavily secured due to its proximity to the White House perimeter.

The shooting happened close to Farragut Square, a bustling lunchtime hub surrounded by coffee shops, offices and holiday decorations. The square, which sits between two Metro stations, is a popular through-route for workers and tourists and is only minutes away from the presidential residence.
