Taking a big step, UIDAI has deactivated more than 2 crore Aadhaar numbers. This action has been taken to maintain the accuracy of the Aadhaar database and prevent identity theft. UIDAI has taken data from RGI and state governments.
Aadhar card
The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), the body that monitors Aadhaar card in the country, has taken a huge step. To maintain transparency and accuracy of data, UIDAI has deactivated more than 2 crore Aadhaar numbers. These are the Aadhaar numbers which belonged to those people who have passed away. This ‘cleanliness campaign’ is part of a nationwide effort. The direct objective of this initiative is to keep the database accurate and secure.
This question must be coming in your mind that what is the need to deactivate the Aadhaar card of deceased persons? This is directly related to preventing fraud. UIDAI says that if the Aadhaar numbers of deceased persons remain active, their identity may be misused.
UIDAI has joined hands with many government organizations to make this ‘cleanliness campaign’ successful. The data of dead persons is mainly obtained from sources like Registrar General of India (RGI), various states and union territories, Public Distribution System (PDS), and National Social Assistance Programme. Not only this, UIDAI is now planning to work with financial institutions and other such institutions, so that the data of deceased persons can be obtained more widely.
You can also report Aadhaar deactivation
UIDAI has made this process easy for common citizens also. Earlier this year, a new facility has been launched on ‘myAadhaar Portal’, namely ‘Reporting of death of a family member’. Currently, this facility is available for 25 states and union territories that are using the Civil Registration System. The work of connecting other states with this portal is also going on at a fast pace.
If someone in your family has passed away, you can also give information about it on this portal. The family member will have to authenticate himself first. After this, they will have to enter the Aadhaar number and death registration number of the deceased person, as well as other demographic details on the portal. After verification of the information provided by you, UIDAI will take further action on deactivating or not deactivating the Aadhaar number of the deceased person. UIDAI is appealing to all Aadhaar holders that after receiving the death certificate, they should immediately inform the death of their family member on the myAadhaar portal. This will not only keep the data accurate, but will also protect against any kind of possible fraud.
