On Constitution Day, Mamata Banerjee was seen reading the Constitution in front of everyone in Kolkata. He accused the SIR process of creating doubts about citizenship and appealed to protect democracy and federalism while demanding the implementation of NRC.
Mamata Banerjee SIR Protest: Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is continuously registering her protest against the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the voter list in West Bengal. Meanwhile, on the occasion of Constitution Day, his unique style was seen in Kolkata. In an event held on Red Road, Mamata Banerjee was seen reading the Constitution in front of everyone with a copy of the Constitution in her hand. This action was not only symbolic, but also a clear message of their deep dissatisfaction with the policies of the Central Government and the SIR process.
Regarding SIR, Mamata Banerjee alleges that efforts are being made to create unnecessary doubts regarding citizenship. He says that under the guise of this process, an attempt can be made to implement the National Register of Citizens (NRC), which may affect lakhs of people. He said that raising questions on people’s citizenship even after so many decades of independence is against democratic rights.
On Constitution Day, Mamata Banerjee addressed B.R. Garlanded the statue of Ambedkar and paid tribute to those who made the Constitution. Subsequently, he gave a public statement, saying that democracy, socialism and federalism are under threat in the country, and hence, citizens need to more strongly embrace the values of the Constitution. He also said that the Constitution is the strongest document that binds together India’s diversity, cultures, languages and communities.
Many political analysts believe that this move by Mamata Banerjee is a strategic message—on the one hand, to increase public awareness against SIR, and on the other, to reaffirm the importance of the Constitution. Holding the Constitution in his hand and reading it in front of everyone shows his political stand and commitment to protect democratic values.
