Skanda Sashti Vrat Katha
According to the mythological story of Skanda Shashthi, once a powerful demon named Tarakasura had created great terror on the gods. Brahmaji told that only the son of Lord Shiva has the power to kill him. At that time Lord Shiva was engrossed in penance in separation from Sati. At the behest of all the gods, Mother Parvati pleased Lord Shiva by doing severe penance and she got married to Lord Shiva.
According to religious beliefs, after marriage, when Shiva and Parvati were in a cave, a pigeon drank the semen produced by the radiance of Lord Shiva, but could not bear it and threw it into the Ganges. Due to the waves of Ganga, it got divided into six parts, due to which the six-faced Kartikeya was born.
Lord Kartikeya was made the commander of the gods in his childhood itself. With his bravery and strategy, he killed Tarakasura and freed the gods from his tyranny. Lord Kartikeya was born on the Shashti Tithi of Shukla Paksha, hence the tradition of worshiping him and observing fast started on this day.
