Edgbaston Test: Gill roars with maiden double century, becomes first Indian captain to cross 200-run mark on English soil

New Delhi: Indian skipper Shubman Gill continued his excellent run with the bat in England after slamming a masterclass double century on the second day of the Edgbaston Test match. Gill became the first Indian skipper to slam a double hundred on English soil in Test cricket.

Joining the elite list of other Indian captains to have achieved the landmark during their tenure, Gill also became only the third Indian player after Sunil Gavaskar and Rahul Dravid to slam a double hundred in England. The 25-year-old completed the milestone in 311 balls with plethora of boundaries and couple of maximums.

Along with Ravindra Jadeja, who was out after a stupendous 89-run knock, Gill stitched a record stand of 213 runs to put India in a commanding position in the crucial Test match for the visitors. Gill earlier surpassed Mohammed Azharuddin to register the highest score in England by an Indian captain. Interestingly, it was after 23 long years an Indian player smashed a double century on the English soil.
