King Janak had placed a condition in Sita Swayamvar that whoever could lift and break Shiva’s bow (whose name was Pinak), the marriage of Mother Sita would be fixed with him.

Many powerful princes from far and wide took part in the Swayamvar of Mother Sita. At the same time, the very powerful Ravana himself had gone to the Swayamvara with the desire to attain Mother Sita. His aim was to demonstrate his power by lifting Shiva’s bow and make Sita his wife. But despite being powerful, Ravana could not lift the bow of Shiva. In such a situation, when Ravana could not lift the Shiva bow in Sita Swayamvar, it was Lord Ram’s turn. Lord Ram circumambulated the Pinak bow by saluting and paying respect to the bow. Due to his humility and reverence the heaviness of the bow vanished and he easily lifted it and broke it.
