According to religious beliefs, Mother Sita’s Swayamvara took place on Shukla Paksha Panchami Tithi of Margashirsha month. King Janak of Mithila had organized a swayamvar. Many mighty and great kings had attended this swayamvar. Along with Guru Vashishtha, Lord Shri Ram and his brother Lakshman also reached this swayamvar. In the Swayamvar, King Janak had set a condition that he would marry his daughter Sita to whoever would tie the string to Lord Shiva’s huge Pinaka bow.

After this, all the kings and emperors tried to lift the bow, but no one was successful. After this, Lord Ram put the string on Lord Shiva’s bow and the bow broke. Then Mother Sita chose Lord Ram as her husband and both of them got married. Because of breaking the bow of Lord Shiva, the fame of Shri Ram spread in all three worlds. After the marriage of Lord Ram and Mother Sita, the festival of Vivah Panchami started being celebrated every year on the fifth day of Shukla Paksha of Margashirsha month.
