A massive plume of volcanic ash from Ethiopia’s Hayli Gubbi volcano reached India on Monday night, casting an unusual haze across parts of the northwest and prompting widespread aviation alerts. The long-dormant volcano, located in the Afar Rift, erupted on Sunday for the first time in nearly 10,000 years, releasing a towering column of ash and sulphur dioxide that travelled rapidly across the Red Sea.
