muharram 2026
Tazia & Muharram: Muharram is one of the four holy months of Islam. This month has special significance for Muslims around the world. According to the Islamic Hijri calendar, the holy month of Muharram is the first month of Islam. That means Islamic New Year starts from this month. However, in Islam, the first 10 days of Muharram are considered to be days of sorrow and mourning, because this is the same time in which the battle was fought in Karbala, Iraq and in which Imam Hussain, the grandson of Prophet Mohammad, was martyred along with his 72 companions.
During this time, Muslims around the world organize Majlis, Matam, Sabeel and other religious programs remembering the martyrdom of Imam Hussain. Ashura is considered the most important day of this month. Ashura is celebrated on the 10th of Muharram. Ashura is being celebrated today in Saudi Arabia and United Arab Emirates (UAE) due to one day of moon being visible. Whereas in India it will be celebrated on 26th June, Friday i.e. tomorrow. During this time Tajiya will also be taken out. Let us know why it is removed?
What is Tajiya?
The most prominent symbol during Muharram is Tajiya. Tajiye is not just a religious structure, rather it tells a long story of Islamic history and tradition. Tajiyas are taken out during Muharram in many cities of India. Lakhs of people participate in these processions. Tajiya is considered a symbolic model of the tomb of Imam Hussein in Karbala. It is made from paper, bamboo, wood, metal and other decorative things.
It is prepared especially for Muharram. Generally, Muslims bring Tajiya to homes, Imambaras and Azakhanas before or in the beginning days of the first date of Muharram. After this, on the tenth day of Muharram i.e. Ashura, it is buried or taken to a designated place.
Why is Tajiya taken out in Muharram?
Many of the traditions that are followed during Muharram center around the Tajiya. These traditions include Majlis, Matam, Nauha, Procession, Alam and Sabeel. After the arrival of Tazia, condolence meetings are organized in Azakhanas and Imambaras. During this time people pay obeisance to Hussain and remember the incidents of Karbala. Condolence programs are organized at different places for women and men.
