The origin of Shivalinga is described in the ninth chapter of volume one of Shivpuran. According to the legend, once there was a duel between Lord Vishnu and Lord Brahma. The fight took place over who was the most powerful? When this news spread all around, all the gods, sages and sages asked Vishnu ji and Brahma ji to go to Lord Shiva.

After this all the gods went to Lord Shiva. Mahadev was already aware of the conflict going on between Lord Vishnu and Brahma. Mahadev said that the one who first reaches the end of the flame generated by him will be considered the most powerful. Lord Vishnu and Brahma ji accepted this statement of Mahadev. At the same time a flame emerged from the luminous body of Lord Shiva.

Jyot started being worshiped as Shivalinga

This flame was moving towards the underworld and the sky. Lord Vishnu and Brahma ji could not even reach the flame. After this Lord Vishnu apologized to Mahadev for not being able to reach the flame. However, Lord Brahma said that the last point of the flame is in the underworld. After this, Shiv ji told Brahma ji that he was lying and Mahadev declared Vishnu ji powerful. Only then this flame started being worshiped in the form of Shivalinga.
