Sita Swayamvar: Why was King Dashrath not invited to Mother Sita’s Swayamvar?

Sita Swayamvar

Ram Sita Marriage: There are many famous incidents in Valmiki Ramayana, one of which is the Swayamvar of Mother Sita. According to the Hindu calendar, Lord Ram and Mother Sita were married on the fifth day of Shukla Paksha of Margashirsha month. But before marriage, a swayamvar of Mother Sita was organized by her father, in which many kings from far and wide participated. Everyone knows that Ravana had also come to Mother Sita’s Swayamvar, but do you know that King Janak had not sent an invitation to King Dashrath i.e. for Sita’s Swayamvar in Ayodhya? Let us know.

Why was King Dashrath not invited to Sita Swayamvar?

There is a mythological story behind why King Janak did not send the invitation for his daughter Sita ji’s swayamvar to Ayodhya i.e. King Dasharatha. It is believed that the reason for not sending the invitation for Sita Swayamvar to Ayodhya was a fear of King Janak. Actually, such an incident had happened in the kingdom of King Janak, due to which he was afraid for his daughter also. He was afraid that his daughter might get married to a common man from Ayodhya.

Why was the invitation for Sita Swayamvar not sent to Ayodhya?

King Janak did not send invitations to Ayodhya for Sita Swayamvara because he feared that if King Dasharatha sent any ordinary person from Ayodhya such as a servant or gatekeeper, he would break Shiva’s bow and Sita would be married to him.

King Janak’s fear

King Janak was afraid that if even an ordinary servant from Ayodhya comes to the Swayamvar and breaks the bow, it means that everyone living in Ayodhya (even the most ordinary servant) is very powerful. In such a situation, if a servant breaks the bow, it would not be good for his daughter Sita.

Reason for not sending invitation to King Dasharatha

Incident of excessively devoted woman: There is a story behind the fear of King Janak, according to which, once in the kingdom of King Janak, a person did not help the cow, due to which he was cursed. The man lost his eyesight, which needed a devoted woman to restore it. King Dasharatha sent one of his sweeping maids, who with her devotion filled the Ganga water in a sieve and sprinkled the water on the man and restored his eyesight.

That’s why no invitation was sent to Ayodhya

Seeing this, King Janak thought that if even a maid could be so devoted, then how powerful her husband would be. This incident convinced King Janak that the common people of Ayodhya were also very powerful and hence he did not want to invite people to Ayodhya so that no common man would come and break the bow.

Later Guru Vishwamitra reached Janakpuri with Ram and Lakshman, because they were protecting the demon and the Yagya. Similarly, Shri Ram broke the Pinaka bow and married Sita. When Lord Rama broke the bow, King Janak later sent an invitation to Maharaja Dasharatha for marriage.
