26/11 Mumbai Terror Attack timeline: The 26/11 attack on Mumbai was not just a terrorist incident, but the biggest test of India’s security, courage and prompt action. This storm of terror, which started on the night of 26 November 2008, continued to shake the city for 60–65 hours. 10 Pakistani terrorists who came via sea attacked many places simultaneously and created such a fear, the memory of which still gives goosebumps. From CST station to Taj Hotel, Oberoi-Trident, Leopold Café and Nariman House, gunshots, explosions and panic were visible everywhere. 166 people lost their lives and more than 300 people were injured in this attack. 26 November: Entry of terrorists through sea.
As evening fell, preparations for the attack had begun. 10 terrorists left Karachi, Pakistan via sea. En route, they captured the Indian fishing boat MV Kuber, killed the crew and proceeded towards Mumbai in the same boat. A few kilometers before reaching Mumbai, they also killed the boat captain and took off in a small rubber boat towards Badarwur Park, Macchimar Nagar and Sassoon Dock near Colaba.
November 26, 8 to 10 pm: Simultaneous attacks across the city
As soon as they entered Mumbai, the terrorists divided into four teams and started attacking at different places. Their targets were CST Station and Cama Hospital, Taj Mahal Palace Hotel, Oberoi-Trident Hotel, Leopold Cafe, Nariman (Chabad) House. Between 9.20 am and 9.30 am, simultaneous firing and grenade attacks started at three places, Leopold, CST and Taj. The situation was most dangerous in CST. In just 90 minutes, 58 people died and more than 100 were injured.
November 26, 10 pm to midnight: Major attack on police officers
The two terrorists who attacked from CST, Ajmal Kasab and Ismail Khan, headed towards Cama Hospital. They carried out an ambush near Rang Bhawan, Metro Cinema, in which three senior officers ATS Chief Hemant Karkare, Encounter Specialist Vijay Salaskar, Additional Commissioner Ashok Kamte were martyred. After some time, Ismail was killed in the encounter and Kasab was captured alive, which became the biggest evidence of the attack. On the other hand, terrorists had completely entered Taj, Oberoi and Nariman House and were holding people hostage and firing indiscriminately.
27 November: City becomes battlefield, entry of NSG
As the night wore on, police and RAF surrounded the Taj and Oberoi. By morning, MARCOS commandos also arrived and efforts began to evacuate people from the floor below. The firing continued throughout the day. By evening, NSG commandos from Delhi reached Mumbai and took over the operation of the three main places, i.e. Taj, Oberoi and Nariman House. Commandos entered the rooms and rescued people trapped on each floor, while the terrorists were continuously throwing grenades.

November 28: Major action at Oberoi and Nariman House
In the morning, NSG commandos were dropped from the helicopter directly on the roof of Nariman House. From here he started the operation from top to bottom. Oberoi-Trident was secured by afternoon. Both the terrorists here were killed and about 30–35 people were saved alive. By the evening Nariman House was also declared free, but the sad thing was that some of the hostages there, including the rabbi and his wife, were found dead.

29 November: Taj Hotel secured
Taj’s operation lasted the longest because the terrorists were hiding in the old wing. The fighting continued throughout the night and between 6 and 9 in the morning the last two terrorists were also killed. With this, the terror of 26/11 ended after about 65 hours.

166 lives lost in 26/11 Mumbai terror attack
A total of 166 people lost their lives in the Mumbai terrorist attack on 26 November 2008, including 18 security personnel. More than 300 people were injured. Amidst all this, India’s security agencies proved that no matter how horrific the attacks are, the country can unite and fight them.
