Yashasvi Jaiswal unlikely to be picked in Asia Cup 2025 squad, told to focus on red-ball cricket – Report

New Delhi: Yashasvi Jaiswal is reportedly unlikely to feature in India’s squad for the upcoming Asia Cup 2025. The talented left-handed opening batter has been a prolific run-getter for India in Test cricket and continues to prove his mettle across all conditions. Jaiswal performed well in India’s recently concluded Test series against England with 511 runs in 5 matches.

One of the most highly rated youngsters in world cricket, Jaiswal is dubbed as an all-format future star of Indian cricket. While he has been exceptional in Tests, Jaiswal has also done well in T20Is for India with 723 runs in 23 matches at a strike rate of over 164. He has also been a consistent performer for the Rajasthan Royals in the Indian Premier League (IPL).

However, as per a report in the Times of India, Jaiswal is unlikely to be selected in India’s squad for the Asia Cup 2025, which will be played in T20 format. A BCCI source revealed that Jaiswal has been asked to focus on red-ball cricket by the selectors. The source added that Shubman Gill’s selection is also a doubt as India have a settled opening pair in T20Is.

“With India looking to persist with the opening pair of Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma, Gill is currently struggling to even make it to the side. Even Yashasvi Jaiswal, who had a great series in England, and middle-order bat Shreyas Iyer are likely not to be picked for the T20 side. Jaiswal has been told by the selectors to focus on red-ball cricket,” a BCCI source told the Times of India.

There is also intense debate surrounding Gill’s return to India’s T20I squad for the Asia Cup 2025. Gill produced a stellar display with the bat in the recently concluded Test series against England. Leading India in his first series as captain, Gill finished as the highest run-getter with an impressive 754 runs in 5 matches at an excellent average of over 75.
