During the last rites the body is returned to the fire.

After this, the remaining bones are selected and then within 10 days they are immersed in the Ganga. It is believed that the soul attains peace only after immersing the ashes in the Ganges. Then she moves towards the journey to heaven. It is also said in the Puranas that sins are destroyed by immersing the bones in the Ganga. According to beliefs, Ganga came from heaven to earth due to the penance of Bhagiratha.
