Genesis Magma GT Concept could be a road going sports car

New Delhi: While unveiling the long-awaited production version of their first proper high-performance car, the GV60 Magma, Hyundai’s luxury brand Genesis have shown a mid-engined supercar concept. Named the Magma GT Concept, it is being hinted as the brand’s performance heritage for the next decade, and Genesis is open that this isn’t going to remain a concept.

The brand says that it is the brand’s best expression yet of their commitment to their future of bringing high-performance vehicles. Which does mean that in the next decade, this might actually go into production. Very little is known about this except that it is a mid-engined sports car, and there are no batteries or motors involved for now.

Top Gear even reported that it could use a version of a 3.2-litre twin-turbo V8 that powers the GMR-001 Le Mans Hypercar.

Why does Genesis want to bring a mid-size supercar?

A brand that is associated mostly with luxury cars, suddenly turning its attention to a mid-size supercar has raised many eyebrows. The belief is that the brand wants the Magma to be a sub-brand to take on the likes of M, AMG and RS, and such an attention-seeking car is the way. Plus, Genesis is entering the World Endurance Championship in the top Hypercar class next year. In their press release, they mentioned that it was a ‘hint’ towards the brand wanting to explore the GT-segment.

It does suggest that they are looking to enter the GT3 class as well, which requires the cars to be based on production models. They can’t turn the GV70 into a race car, and hence, they could build enough Magma GT to become a good base for the racing expansion. They are going the Toyota way, which are taking the same path with their upcoming GR GT, signalling a return of proper homologation special.
