Mythological stories related to Sun worship on Sunday
There are two main stories behind establishing the rule of worshiping Sun God on Sunday.
Story of birth of Sun God
According to a mythological story, when this creation began, the first word ‘Om’ came from the mouth of Lord Brahma. This ‘Om’ itself is considered to be the bright, subtle form of the Sun. After this, four Vedas were born from the four mouths of Lord Brahma, which became one with this ‘Om’. This Vedic radiance was called Aditya (Sun), who is the indestructible cause of creation. Since Surya appeared at the beginning of creation, and provided light and energy to the entire universe, he was considered the first and most important god. Sunday is considered the first day of the week, hence this day automatically got dedicated to Sun God.
Sunday fast and the story of the old woman
According to the story of Sunday fast, there lived a poor and old woman in a city. She regularly observed Sunday fast and offered water to the Sun God. Pleased with his devotion, Sun God gave him a cow. She used to get gold from the dung of that cow, due to which the old woman’s house became prosperous.
Seeing the prosperity of the old woman, her neighbor became jealous. Under the influence of his neighbour, the king snatched away the old woman’s cow. As soon as the cow arrived in the king’s palace, instead of dung, dirt spread throughout the palace and a foul smell started emanating. Then at night, Sun God appeared in the king’s dream and told that this cow belonged to an old woman who was his great devotee and regularly fasts on Sundays.
The king repented of his mistake. He immediately returned the cow to the old woman and honored her by giving her many gifts. From that very day the king ordered the entire city to observe Sunday fast and worship the Sun God. This story established the belief that fasting and worshiping on Sunday removes poverty and brings happiness and prosperity.
