The freight performance of Railways continues to strengthen the economic backbone of India. In the current financial year 2025-26, till November 19, the total freight traffic has crossed the mark of one billion tonnes. The Railway Ministry said on Saturday that the total freight traffic during this period was more than 102 crore tonnes. The statement said this achievement reflects widespread support from key sectors. Coal was the biggest contributor, amounting to 505 million tonnes.

Iron’s number after coal

After this, iron ore was 115 million tonnes, cement 92 million tonnes, container trade 59 million tonnes, pig iron and finished steel 47 million tonnes, fertilizers 42 million tonnes, mineral oil 32 million tonnes, food grains 30 million tonnes, raw material for steel plants about 20 million tonnes and other goods 74 million tonnes. Daily freight traffic remains strong at around 44 lakh tonnes, up from 42 lakh tonnes last year, reflecting improved operational efficiency and sustained demand, the statement said.
