The incident happened when a car travelling across the flyover suddenly lurched out of control and smashed into a row of two-wheelers, triggering chaos during peak-hour traffic. The car’s driver suffered a heart attack and lost control oft he vehicle.
The collision occurred around 7:15 pm on the stretch that links Ambernath’s eastern neighbourhoods to its western side. Commuters on the flyover said the car appeared to accelerate unevenly before it swerved sharply across the lane. Footage captured by a nearby CCTV camera shows the out-of-control vehicle ploughing into multiple two-wheelers in quick succession. Bikes toppled over and several riders were thrown onto the road as other motorists scrambled to avoid the wreckage. Police teams reached the scene soon after and began clearing the flyover.
A report by India Today later revealed that the vehicle belonged to Shiv Sena’s local poll candidate, Kiran Chaubey. She had been travelling with two aides as part of her election outreach. Their driver, Lakshman Shinde, is believed to have suffered a sudden heart attack moments before the crash, which caused the car to leap over and hit several vehicles coming from the opposite direction.
Local residents rushed forward to pull Chaubey and her team from the damaged vehicle. All three were taken to a nearby hospital, where doctors said she was in a stable condition and kept under observation. Her aides are also recovering.
However, the accident proved fatal for Shinde, who died at the spot. Two young men from the locality — identified as Sumit Chelani and Shailesh Jadhav — also lost their lives in the accident.
