Buck Moon 2025: Date, time, visibility, and sky watching tips

New Delhi: Star gazers take note: the Buck Moon, the first of the summer seasons, will appear July 10, 2025, with the highest point of brightness at 4:37 a.m. locally in the early hours of the day, July 11, 2025. The full moon can be observed anywhere on the globe, and it will be illuminating the night all the way from sunset to sunrise, and it will have a special guest starring next to it, i.e., Mars and Venus.

The full moon this month is not only a sight to behold. The Buck Moon is rich in cultural values and seasonal associations and has been celebrated throughout centuries. In case the skies or weather interfere, there is no need to panic, as the moon will be over 95 per cent full on July 8-12, so you will have multiple opportunities to admire the shining show.

Why is it called the Buck Moon?

It is named after the Buck Moon, in which male deer, or bucks, grow antlers during the season. The peak growth of these antlers occurs in July when they are velvet covered. Its name derives from the Native American and colonial cultures that named full moons according to the rhythms of nature.

Thunderstorms, salmon and more

This moon is also called the Thunder Moon because of storms which often occur during the month of July. Less popular names are the Salmon Moon, to note the migration of the fish, and the Feather Moulting Moon, which is connected to birds which shed their old feathers, such as ducks. These are names which show the natural action that is abundant in this season.

Global view and cultural significance

Elsewhere it has been referred to as the Hay Moon (Anglo-Saxon), Mead Moon, or Herb Moon (Celtic), all of these terms referring to harvests at midsummer. The Buck Moon is a sign of growth, preparation, and change no matter where on earth it is present: in the fields, in the forests, or in the skies.
