IIT Madras to pioneer new B.Tech curriculum combining music and mathematics

Chennai: In a ground breaking interdisciplinary move, IIT Madras is developing a new curriculum that formally integrates the study of music with mathematics. The institute’s Director, V. Kamakoti, announced the initiative, explaining that the inherent mathematical structures in music, particularly Carnatic music, make the two fields a natural fit for combined academic exploration.

The Logic Behind the Rhythm: Mathematics as the Foundation of Music

Announcing the plan at the inaugural ceremony of the Margazhi Maha Utsavam at Chennai’s Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Director Kamakoti elaborated on the connection. “It is because mathematics is mixed with Carnatic music that we never get bored no matter how much we listen to music,” he stated. He pointed to the deep connection between musical notes, rhythms, and mathematical patterns, suggesting that this synergy will form the core of the new academic program. The curriculum is being designed for the B.Tech department, with a formal announcement expected soon.

A Broader Vision: Embedding Culture in Technical Education

The new curriculum aligns with a larger vision of incorporating India’s cultural heritage into modern technical education. Director Kamakoti referenced Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s goal of a developed India by 2047, emphasizing that achieving this requires making children aware of the country’s culture. “Let the singing children sing, let them play,” he said, advocating for a holistic educational approach that nurtures both scientific and artistic talents.

Expanding Opportunities for Music Scholars at IITs

The institute is also taking concrete steps to make IITs more accessible to students of music and culture. Kamakoti revealed that IIT Madras has already allocated 36 seats specifically for music and culture, with 7 students having already joined under this initiative. Furthermore, he announced that the administration is actively holding talks to introduce similar reservation policies for music and culture across all IITs in the country. In a significant move to bridge academia and the arts, the institute is also facilitating opportunities for students enrolled in these courses to participate in public concerts, providing them with a platform to showcase their talent.
