Garun Purana

Garuda Purana: Death is the biggest and final truth of this life. Every living being born in the world of death has to leave this world one day, but the truth is that only the body of the living being dies. The soul is considered immortal. Death and last journey have been described in detail in Garun Purana. Everything related to a person’s death and his last rites is described in Garun Purana.

The process of last rites is considered very important in Hindu religion. The last rites are always performed according to the rules and ideals. In Garun Purana and other scriptures, it has been said that only sons should perform the last rites, but now in the changing times, daughters and son-in-laws have also started performing the last rites. Let us know what is written in Garun Purana about son-in-law performing the last rites?

According to Garun Purana…

According to Garun Purana, the son has the first right to perform the last rites of the deceased. Although there is no direct mention in Garun Purana of stopping the son-in-law from performing the last rites, but according to the beliefs and traditions of Sanatan Dharma, the son-in-law is prohibited from performing the last rites. The son-in-law is not considered a full member of the in-laws’ family.

Son-in-law has no right to last rites

The son-in-law is only the husband of the daughter, hence he does not have the duties of a son. Many sons-in-law are unable to connect themselves with their wife’s family. They consider it as another family. After Kanyadaan, the daughter loses her connection with her family. She joins some other lineage and clan. In this way, she and her husband have no religious connection with the girl’s family. Therefore the son-in-law is not allowed to perform the last rites.

not allowed to go to funeral

In some areas, the son-in-law is seen as ‘Jam’ or Yamdoot, hence distance is maintained from the son-in-law. In many places the son-in-law is not allowed to attend the funeral. However, in some communities and families, if a son or grandson is not available, the last rites are performed by another relative, or even by a son-in-law.
