According to filmmaker Karan Johar, there came a time in his life when he felt embarrassed looking at himself. According to him, he used to walk and run like girls. Her voice was like that of a woman. She even took voice coaching for three years to improve her feminine voice. The special thing is that when he was taking this coaching, his father Yash Johar did not know anything about it. Because Karan had been lying to her for three years. Actually, Karan was talking to Sania Mirza in her podcast.
Karan Johar is fond of learning new things
Karan, 53, told Sania, “I was very fond of courses. I was always doing some course or the other. I loved learning things. In those days, boys of my age used to play sports and I was learning cooking and even arranging fruits and flowers. I also did an import-export class. One of the courses I was passionate about was public speaking. Because I loved speeches and drama in school.”

Karan Johar’s voice was like a woman’s
Karan admitted in this conversation that his voice was like that of a woman and he came to know about it when his coach advised him to take voice coaching to make his voice more baritone. He says, “A man running the academy came to me after two sessions and said, you are a very smart kid, but you have a girl’s voice. You have a very feminine personality and your voice is like a girl’s. And the world is harsh on men who speak like that. So I can help you baritone your voice and make it more man-like.”
Karan Johar used to take voice coaching three days a week
Karan Johar further recalled that period and said, “It was 1989. It was a very impressionable time for any child. We were not aware. There was no wakefulness, no self-awareness or no counseling to help you. It was not a time to get along with everyone. You were weak, scared and worried. So I took his (coach’s) advice and did voice coaching with him for three years. I paid for it, three days a week, but I was too shy to tell him why I was doing it.

Karan Johar was 15 years old at that time
During this, Karan Johar told that his progressive father never questioned his methods. They were proud of everything they did. However, she took voice coaching because her coach insisted she needed it. According to Karan, “I wanted to do this because the coach told me. The coach told me, ‘If you don’t talk like a man, you will never be able to face the world with confidence.’ So I lied to my father and said that I was going to computer class. I took money from them and gave it to the coach. For 3 years I took coaching to improve my voice and walking, because I used to walk and run like girls. I was 15 years old at the time and I took this training until I was 18 or 19.”
And then Karan Johar’s lie was caught!
According to Karan Johar, when he was 19 years old, a funny incident happened with him. According to him, when a computer came to his father’s office, he told him that you have been doing this for three years, so here is the computer. According to Karan, “I thought that I had never seen a computer in my life. Because I was not doing computer classes. When I told my father that I don’t know how to do it, he asked me what I was doing for the last three years. In response, I made some excuse and ran away from there.”
