Suicide cases are increasing rapidly around the world. These days people commit suicide for some reason or the other. In this article we will tell you what the religion of Islam says about suicide.
Is suicide haraam in Islam?
Islamic scholar Mufti Salauddin Qasmi said that suicide is a big crime (sin) in Islam. Not only does the world of a person who commits suicide get spoiled, but more than that, his afterlife also gets spoiled. No matter how troubled, sick or depressed a person is, he is not allowed to commit suicide.
In verse 29 of Surah An-Nisa of the Quran, Allah said, “O you who believe! Do not consume each other’s wealth by wrong means – it is a different thing if you have a mutual agreement and do not commit suicide by strangulating yourselves (because) God is kind to you.”
punishment for suicide in islam
In the holy book Quran Sharif, Allah has strictly forbidden to commit suicide. Therefore, suicide in Islam is not only a sin, but also a mistake which can cost a person very heavily even after his life (in the hereafter).
Prophet Muhammad said, “A person who kills himself will be punished after his death with the same punishment as the one who killed himself, that is, if he had taken poison, his poison bottle will remain in his hand and he will keep drinking the same poison again and again in Jahannum (hell).”
Similarly, if someone hits himself with an iron object, then even after his life, he will keep hurting himself with the same thing again and again till the Doomsday.
In a hadith, Prophet Muhammad said, “The person who kills himself with something in this world, that same thing will remain in his hands forever and he will keep killing him with it.”
Is there a funeral prayer for a person who commits suicide?
Mufti Salauddin Qasmi said that Prophet Muhammad had forbidden the funeral prayer for those who committed suicide, so that people could be warned and prevented from committing such acts. Nevertheless, many Sahaabah and later Islamic scholars believed that the funeral can be performed because those who commit suicide are also Muslims, they have just committed a major sin. Therefore, Namaz-e-Janaza of those who commit suicide is also offered.
Is committing suicide Kufr (disbelief)?
Suicide is not considered kufr (disbelief in Allah) in Islam. This does not mean that the person is no longer a Muslim. Suicide is not blasphemy, rather it is a big crime, it is forbidden and the decision for it will be according to the will of Allah. If a Muslim commits suicide, his Namaz-e-Janaza will also be offered and later the Quran can also be recited.
Where do the souls of those who commit suicide go?
Two places have been mentioned in Surah Al Mutafifin of the Quran – Sijjin and Illiyin. Illyin is the heavenly place where the souls of pious Muslims are kept. At the same time, Sijjin is the prison where the souls of criminal Muslims are kept. When a Muslim passes away, his soul is kept in Illiyin or Sijjin according to his good or bad deeds. In such a situation, the souls of those who commit suicide are imprisoned in Sijjin until the Doomsday.
Committing suicide is a big crime and its punishment is hell. According to Islamic belief, life is given by Allah and only Allah has the right to end it. Islam does not permit suicide under any circumstances because it is not only a crime but also a haraam act. Such people will always burn in hell fire.
