Antibiotic resistance is a condition when the bacteria present in the body become ineffective against medicines. Normally, antibiotic medicines destroy the germs causing infection, but when these medicines start becoming ineffective, then treatment becomes difficult. The Lancet-eClinical Medicine The latest report published in India states that India is emerging as the epicenter of antibiotic resistance. According to the study, 83 percent of Indian patients were found to have bacteria that do not respond to many types of antibiotics. Let us know.
The biggest reason behind increasing antibiotic resistance is wrong and excessive use of medicines. Even in case of minor infections like cold and cough, people start taking antibiotics without doctor’s advice. Many times the complete course of medicines is not taken completely, due to which the bacteria adapt to the medicines and there are changes in them. Excessive use of antibiotics in animal husbandry and agriculture also increases this problem. Apart from this, choosing the wrong antibiotic, changing the medicine yourself, fake or poor quality medicines and weak infection control system in hospitals also make the bacteria stronger. All these reasons together are creating such superbugs i.e. extremely powerful bacteria, on which common antibiotics have no effect.
Why are antibiotics not working? What does the study say?
The Lancet study shows that In India, such bacteria are increasing rapidly which have become resistant to many antibiotics. The report said that multi-drug resistant organisms (MDRO) were found in 83% of Indian patients. ESBL-producing bacteria were found in more than 70% of these cases, which destroy the effect of commonly used medicines. At the same time, in 23% of patients such bacteria were found which do not die even with the most powerful antibiotics.
In India, reckless use of antibiotics, easy availability of OTC medicines, wrong prescription and weak infection control are making this situation more serious. The study shows that this problem has now spread not only in hospitals, but also in common people, water, food and the environment around us. This is why India is at the center of this global threat.
Why is there a big danger in the future?
If antibiotic resistance continues to increase at this pace, even simple infections can become fatal. If the medicines become ineffective, the treatment will be long, expensive and difficult. It is very difficult to make new antibiotics, so it can become a big health crisis in the future.
