Born on November 19, 1917, to India’s first Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru and Kamala Nehru, Indira Gandhi served as the country’s first and only female Prime Minister from January 1966 to March 1977 and again from January 1980 until her assassination in October 1984. On October 31, 1984, he was shot dead by two of his own bodyguards at his official residence on Akbar Road, following which anti-Sikh riots broke out in many parts of the country.
The Prime Minister also paid tribute to ‘Warrior Queen’ Lakshmibai on her 197th birth anniversary and praised her bravery and valor during the freedom struggle. PM Modi wrote on Twitter, “Regards to Queen Laxmibai, the immortal warrior of Mother India, on her birth anniversary. The story of her bravery and valor in the first struggle for independence still fills the hearts of the countrymen with enthusiasm and passion. Urging everyone to never forget her sacrifice, PM Modi said, “A grateful nation can never forget her sacrifice and struggle to protect the glory of the motherland.”
Earlier, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi and other Congress leaders paid floral tributes to Indira Gandhi at the former PM’s memorial site ‘Shakti Sthal’. Let us tell you, she was the second longest serving Prime Minister after Nehru and was known for many major economic and social reforms including nationalization of banks. He also abolished the privy purses of the former princely states. Indira Gandhi, known as the ‘Iron Lady of India’, was actively involved in the freedom movements. He also started ‘Bal Charkha Sangh’ and ‘Vanar Sena’ to support Congress and fight against the British Army during the Civil Disobedience Movement. Indira Gandhi, considered one of the world’s greatest leaders, was assassinated by her own Sikh bodyguards at her residence on Akbar Road on October 31, 1984. The incident occurred after Operation Bluestar at the Golden Temple in Amritsar, in which Gandhi ordered the Indian Army to confront Sikh separatists sheltering at the holy site.
