Research and experts believe that the kind of names being kept in the changing times are beneficial in many cases, but sometimes they are also promoting discrimination.
Name is not just identity, but it affects children’s confidence, thinking, behavior and even career. That’s why nowadays parents think more about the name. According to a study, the trend of common names has been continuously decreasing since 1983. In 2023, 64,560 unique names were registered in America, which is double than in 1999.
Government interference regarding unique name in Japan
According to America’s Babysitter website, this year names like Juniper, Matlakai and Emerson have joined the top 100 for the first time. This situation is not only in America, but all over the world. In Japan, there have been so many changes regarding the name that the government has had to intervene. The government here has banned names based on brands and cartoon characters.

According to Cambridge University researcher Kevin Shurer, nowadays parents are choosing children’s names under the influence of social media and TV. In India too, ever since the era of daily serials has increased, people have started naming their children inspired by character names. Moving away from traditional names, parents are now looking for a unique name which no other child has.

A study also revealed that if boys are given names like girls, they may become more mischievous. Whereas if girls get names like boys, they can perform better in science and maths.

According to a research, a person’s name can also influence the direction of his career. It was observed in the study that people whose names match their work or professional image are more likely to progress in the same field. Another research conducted in Australia revealed that candidates with English names received 26.8% more positive responses for leadership roles, while those with non-English names received only 11.3% response rate. This suggests that a form of discrimination based on name also exists in the workplace, which can sometimes impact access to opportunities.
