Paying income tax has now become even easier. Direct taxes like advance tax, self-assessment tax can now be paid directly using UPI through the Income Tax e-filing portal. You can transfer money from your linked bank account through apps like Paytm, PhonePe, Google Pay. There is no need to go to the bank or set up net banking for this.
Easy ways to pay taxes: 4 steps
Easy steps to pay tax are given below…
step 1:
- Open incometax.gov.in website.
- Log in using PAN as user ID and password.
- On the dashboard, click on ‘e-Pay Tax’ option.
Step 2:
- Select ‘New Payment’.
- Select tax type.
- Select the correct assessment year.
- Enter the amount to be paid.
- After this, check your name and PAN once again to make sure.
- After this you will see the amount and payment methods.
Step 3:
- Select ‘UPI’ as payment method.
- A QR code will appear on the portal.
- Open any one of the Paytm, PhonePe or Google Pay apps on your mobile phone.
- Scan the QR code given on the portal.
- Complete the payment using the UPI PIN after ensuring that the amount is correct.
Step 4:
- Come back to the e-filing tab. The payment status will change to ‘Paid’ in a minute or two.
- Download the challan receipt.
- This receipt will contain CIN and UTR numbers – these are the main proof of payment.
- Keep these documents safely and mail them to yourself.
What to do if payment fails?
- Sometimes the status on UPI may appear as ‘Pending’.
- In this situation, do not make the payment again immediately. Wait 30-60 minutes and refresh ‘Payment History’.
- If the status does not change and money has been deducted from your bank account, lodge a complaint on the portal.
- In most failed UPI transactions, the money is returned to the account.
Keep these things in mind to avoid mistakes
- Before filing taxes, ensure that the assessment year and tax type are correct.
- Make sure that your UPI linked account has sufficient balance and that the account is KYC-verified.
- Keep the browser tab open until the payment is successfully completed and receipt is received.
- Keep the PDF of the challan, UPI transaction ID and bank SMS safe. These may be required while filing Income Tax Return (ITR) or when the department asks for proof.
