Meat Ban On Independence Day Sparks Political Uproar, Opposition MPs Call It ‘Unconstitutional’

Meat Ban On Independence Day: A major political storm has broken out across India following orders from multiple municipal corporations to shut down meat shops and slaughterhouses on August 15, Independence Day. Critics across party lines have condemned the move, calling it an infringement on individual rights and personal freedom, a particularly bitter irony, they argue, on a day that celebrates the nation’s independence.

The issue first drew sharp attention when Hyderabad MP and AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi strongly objected to the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation’s (GHMC) directive enforcing the closure of meat shops and slaughterhouses on August 15 and 16, citing Independence Day and Janmashtami. Owaisi questioned the rationale behind associating national pride with dietary restrictions, calling the move unconstitutional and a violation of fundamental rights.

“What connection does eating meat have with celebrating Independence Day?” Owaisi asked in a post on X (formerly Twitter). “These bans go against the rights to liberty, privacy, livelihood, culture, nutrition, and religion especially in a state like Telangana, where 99% of the population consumes meat.”

Owaisi’s comments came amid reports that similar bans were being issued by civic bodies across the country. The GHMC, for example, cited Section 533 (b) of the GHMC Act, 1955, in its order, which was communicated to the Police Commissioners of Hyderabad, Cyberabad, and Rachakonda.

Why Is Meat Banned In Maharashtra On Independence Day?

In Maharashtra, the Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar Municipal Corporation announced a ban on animal slaughter and meat sales on August 15 and 20. Violations, it warned, would be met with action under the Maharashtra Municipal Corporation Act, 1949. The latter date, August 20, coincides with Paryushan Parva, a significant Jain festival marked by fasting and spiritual reflection.

Authorities said the move was not new such directives have been issued annually since 1988 as part of civic efforts to maintain public order during major religious and national events. Still, this year’s enforcement has triggered fierce criticism.

Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar voiced his opposition, saying such restrictions may be acceptable on religious occasions like Mahavir Jayanti or Ashadhi Ekadashi, but not on national holidays. “In large cities, people from diverse religious and cultural backgrounds live together. Imposing such bans on days like Independence Day or Republic Day is inappropriate,” he told reporters.

In response to the mounting criticism, Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena spokesperson Arun Sawant clarified that the state government had not endorsed the meat ban and accused the Opposition of spreading misinformation to tarnish the government’s image.
