Judge Ghulam Murtaza Majumdar delivered the verdict against Sheikh Hasina in a crowded court. As soon as he finished reading his decision, the people present in the court started celebrating. While deciding the death penalty for the accused, he said that there are enough reasons to sentence all of them against humanity. The verdict was telecast on national channels. The tribunal said the prosecution had proved beyond reasonable doubt that Hasina was behind the deadly crackdown on student-led protests between July 15 and August 15 last year.

Let us tell you that in July 2024, Sheikh Hasina’s government fell due to the student-led rebellion arising out of economic crisis, corruption and employment crisis. On August 5, she went to India and the Yunus-led interim government took power in Bangladesh. A later UN report estimated that around 1,400 people were killed during the protests. It is estimated that elections for the new government may be held in Bangladesh in February 2026.

UN human rights investigators have said Hasina and her government allegedly systematically used lethal force against protesters in an effort to retain power. About 1,400 people died in this. Sheikh Hasina has refused to return from India to attend the trial. He has also denied allegations that he ordered security forces to fire on protesters in the weeks before his escape
