Maharashtra: 6th class student made to do 100 sit-ups, girl dies after punishment

In Palghar’s Vasai, a 12-year-old student died after being punished with 100 sit-ups for coming late to school. The punishment caused internal bleeding to the student, who suffered from asthma, which led to death. Police have registered a case of accidental death.

Palghar (Maharashtra): A 12-year-old Class VI student allegedly died after doing 100 sit-ups as punishment for coming late to school in Vasai, Palghar, Maharashtra. A case of accidental death has been registered at Sir JJ Marg police station in Mumbai, and now the case has been transferred to Waliv police station. On November 8, Kajal and several other late students were asked by their teacher to do sit-ups with school bags on their shoulders. After returning home, Kajal suddenly falls ill. When his condition deteriorated, his family took him to a nearby hospital and later doctors referred him to JJ Hospital in Mumbai. Unfortunately, Kajal Gond died during treatment.

According to mother Sheela Gaur, after being punished for doing sit-ups, Kajal complained of pain and later her condition kept worsening, which eventually led to her tragic death. Kids at a Vasai school did 100, 50 and 60 sit-ups, and his daughter did the same, like everyone else in the school. My daughter didn’t tell me, but whatever the kids said, some said 100, some 50, some 60. The daughter told, I did the same as everyone else… When my daughter came from school, at 5 in the evening she said, Mummy, my back is hurting….

Doctors at JJ Hospital told the family of the deceased student that Kajal had asthma and doing sit-ups while carrying the extra weight of her bag caused her internal bleeding, which ultimately led to her death.
