Hasina Death Penalty Case: The situation in Bangladesh is very tense. ICT is going to give an important verdict today in the crimes-on-humanity case against ousted PM Sheikh Hasina, in which she may even get death sentence.
Sheikh Hasina Verdict: Bangladesh was shaken again late on Sunday night. Continuous explosions, burning of buses and violence in Dhaka and many cities have made the atmosphere extremely tense. The biggest reason for this is the upcoming big decision of the most awaited International Crimes Tribunal (ICT). This is the same case in which former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina could even get the death penalty on charges of ‘Crimes Against Humanity’ in the rebellion in July last year.
Sheikh Hasina’s emotional appeal
In an audio message uploaded on Awami League’s Facebook page at midnight, Hasina asked her supporters to take to the streets. She said, ‘I have no fear…I will live and stand with the people of my country.’ The government has banned protests, but Hasina said the party should not back down.
Nationwide shutdown on Monday
Awami League has announced a Bangladesh bandh on Monday before the verdict on behalf of ICT. Hasina called it a political conspiracy against her and attacked the interim government. He said, ‘This Awami League cannot be erased, it is made from the soil of the people.’ Hasina alleged that party workers are being attacked, schools are being blocked, houses are being raided, open fighting is being done and social media is being monitored.
Sheikh Hasina and government face to face
78 year old former PM Sheikh Hasina directly described ICT as ‘Kangaroo Court’. He claimed that the war-crime trial law of 1973 was being flouted. Hasina said, ‘All the allegations are false…I did not order to kill anyone. The order was given by Dr. Muhammad Yunus. Prosecutors have demanded death penalty from ICT. Parts of the judgment will be shown live. According to the ICT Act, Hasina can appeal only if she is arrested or surrenders within 30 days.
Bomb blasts in Dhaka, orders to shoot at sight
Tension has increased in Dhaka before this decision. Violence in Dhaka has taken a terrible form since last three days. There was a blast in Karwan Bazaar, a crude bomb outside the house of women advisor Syeda Rizwana Hasan, arson in the police station premises, buses were burnt and two attacks on Grameen Bank headquarters. Dhaka Police Commissioner said, ‘Whoever attacks with the intention of killing by throwing a bomb will be shot.’ There is high alert in the entire city.
Anarchy in Bangladesh, 1400 deaths
According to a UN report in February, up to 1,400 people had died in last year’s violence. The interim government put the figure at 800 deaths and 14,000 injured. Hasina calls both the figures fake and is demanding an independent investigation. National elections are to be held in February, but Awami League is banned. Hasina’s son Sajeeb Wajed has warned that if the party is kept out of the elections, the elections will be disrupted.
