Meanwhile, the team suffered a major setback when news broke that captain Shubman Gill had to be hospitalized due to deteriorating health. Gill complained of neck spasms on Saturday, making his availability for this Test and the entire series doubtful. He retired hurt after scoring just 4 runs in the second innings.
South Africa’s first innings was reduced to 159 runs on the first day, with Aiden Markram top-scoring with 31 runs. Jasprit Bumrah bowled brilliantly for India, taking five wickets. In reply, India’s innings also failed to last long, being all out for 189. KL Rahul was the highest scorer of the Test with 39 runs.
