Increase in tax refund, reduction in collection, why are the government upset these figures?

Net direct tax collection

The government’s forehead is seen on the forehead regarding direct tax collection. There is also a reason for that. Due to the increase in tax refund, there has been a decrease in taxes received by the government. If we look at the data, there has been a decrease of about 4 percent in the current financial year in the net direct tax collection. The special thing is that there has been a decrease in tax collection before refund, which is quite surprising. This means that the government’s earnings have declined due to direct tax. The disturbing thing is whether the target of more than 25 lakh crore rupees will be met or not from the tax collection of the government in the current financial year. Let us also tell you what kind of figures have been received from the government…

How much net collection happened

According to the government data released on Tuesday, the net direct tax collection declined by 3.95 per cent to Rs 6.64 lakh crore in the current financial year. The reason for the reduction in tax collection is the higher the refund. Direct tax includes tax on income of companies, individuals, professionals and other institutions. The Net Company Tax Collection was around Rs 2.29 lakh crore, while the non-company tax (which includes individuals, Hindu undivided families and company) collection was Rs 4.12 lakh crore. According to the data, the Security Transaction Tax (STT) collection from April 1 and August 11 has seen Rs 22,362 crore.

How much collection before refund

The collection declined by 3.95 percent to about 6.64 lakh crore rupees. It was Rs 6.91 lakh crore in the same period of the last financial year (2024-25). The refund released so far in the current financial year increased by 10 percent to Rs 1.35 lakh crore. Gross collection (before refund) declined by 1.87 per cent to Rs 7.99 lakh crore between April 1 and August 11, which was Rs 8.14 lakh crore in the same period a year ago. The government has estimated the direct tax collection to be Rs 25.20 lakh crore in the current financial year (2025-26), which is 12.7 percent more on an annual basis. The government aims to collect Rs 78,000 crore from STT in FY 2025-26.
