CBSE Open Book Exam Class 9: There is going to be a big change in school studies from the year 2026-27. The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has approved the Open Book Assessment (OBA) i.e. open book examination for class 9 students. This will mean that now children will be able to see their books and notes while taking the exam. This step is going to insist on understanding and skills away from old -fashioned studies. The decision has been taken after a successful pilot project in December 2023, with good response from teachers, students and parents. Initially this system will be applicable in main subjects such as language, mathematics, science and social science.

In the open book exam, students take the exam with their books, class notes or other accepted study material. But this does not mean that it is an easy examination. Here, instead of memory, the ability to analyze and implement the knowledge in place of memory is emphasized. Why did CBSE start the open book exam?
This step is in line with the National Education Policy 2020 and the National Course Framework 2023, which reduce the rote studies and promote practical and skill based education. According to the teachers involved in the pilot project, the open book exam develops critical thinking, real-life skills, better understanding and analytical abilities in students. Also, it also reduces children’s exam stress because they do not have to depend on the rote.
