To make jewelry stronger, goldsmiths add copper, zinc or silver to pure gold. This makes 22 carat or 18 carat gold. In the process of making jewelery (like cutting, grinding, polishing), gold powder falls, which is called ‘waste’. Goldsmiths deduct 1 gram of this wastage for every 10 grams.
