This year Vivah Panchami is on 25 November 2025. Lord Ram and Mother Sita were married on this auspicious date. There are many interesting incidents in Valmiki Ramayana, one of which is the Swayamvar of Mother Sita. King Janak had set a condition for the marriage of his daughter Sita, which was not possible to be fulfilled even by the most powerful kings.

Marriage of Lord Ram and Mother Sita

The marriage of Ram and Sita took place in Janakpur (Mithila) of Nepal on the fifth day of Shukla Paksha of Margashirsha month in Treta Yuga. This place exists as a marriage hall near the Janaki temple, where Lord Rama married Janaki in a swayamvara. This day is celebrated as the anniversary of Lord Ram and Mother Sita.

What condition did King Janak put in Sita Swayamvar?

King Janak had set a condition for the marriage of his daughter Sita that Mother Sita would be married to whoever would pick up Shiva’s heavy bow and string it. King Janak had set this condition because Goddess Sita herself had lifted this bow with one hand in her childhood, seeing which King Janak had taken a vow that only an extraordinary and powerful man could be the husband of his daughter.

  1. Condition:- Pick up the huge bow of Lord Shiva and string it.

Why did King Janak set this condition?

Once in her childhood, Sita Mata had picked up the bow kept at the worship place of her palace all at once. When King Janak saw that his daughter Sita had lifted the bow without any help, he felt that only a supernatural person could be a suitable groom for his daughter.

Ravana also participated in Sita Swayamvar.

For this reason, King Janak organized a swayamvar for the marriage of Mother Sita, in which powerful kings participated. Lankapati Ravana was also included in the Swayamvar of Mother Sita. But all the kings who wanted to marry Goddess Sita failed to fulfill the condition and failed to offer the throne.

This is how Lord Ram won Sita Swayamvara.

Lord Rama was seeing many powerful kings failing in offering the throne. He meditated that all the kings were failing because they were using force to lift the bow. After observing, Lord Ram first bowed to Lord Shiva’s bow and then, like Mother Sita, tried to lift the bow with great ease and politeness and it got up easily, then while putting the string on it, it broke. After this the marriage of Lord Ram and Mother Sita took place.
