Story of Kaal Bhairav Ashtami fast (Kaal Bhairav Avtar Ki Katha)
According to Shivpuran, once Supreme Father Brahmadev became proud of himself. He started calling himself the best among the three gods. When he was asked about the Vedas, he said that Mahadev was the best. Brahmadev also did not listen to him. At the same time a bright light appeared near Brahmadev who transformed into a fierce man.

Then Mahadev said to Akashvani, ‘You are also the master of time and because of being fierce, you are Bhairav. Hence you are Kalabhairava. After receiving blessings from Lord Shiva, Kalbhairav at that very moment cut off the fifth head of Brahma with his finger nail. By doing this, Kalbhairav was accused of the sin of Brahmahatya and Brahma’s head also stuck to his hand.
To get freedom from Brahmahatya, Kalbhairav went to Kashi, there Brahma’s head got separated from his hand. In this way Kalabhairav was freed from the sin of Brahmahatya. Seeing the devotion of Kalbhairav, Mahadev made him the Kotwal of Kashi. Even today, there is a very ancient and famous temple of Lord Kalabhairava in Kashi, where crowds of devotees gather.
It is believed that if a person comes to Kashi and does not see Kalbhairav after seeing Lord Vishwanath, then he does not get the full benefit of the Kashi pilgrimage. This is the reason why there is a rush of devotees in this temple every day. Devotees from far and wide come here to have darshan and all their wishes are fulfilled here.
